I haven’t posted in a few months, but this whole medical care “debate” drew me out of the woodwork.
The past few weeks have been particularly disgusting within the political/journalistic realm. All I see on facebook these days is how much bickering there has been and all the obstinance, muck-raking and lies put forward by an opposition party doing its job. Many will say this is just because conservatives are mean nasty people, but really, this is how our political system works. By and large, this is a crucial role of professional politicians.
Really its a screwed up process. My dad’s a doctor (yes I am another doctor’s kid that turned out to be an anarchist) and he always seemed capable of using logic. Over the past 10 years, insurance companies’ reimbursements have dropped in half. My dad seems to prefer these monstrous corporations to whatever single-payer/whatever solution the government can work out. Change can be scary, but what we’ve got right now is pretty horrifying.
The insurance companies squeeze both sides of the equation here. I was looking recently at a headline Health-care stocks laugh all the way to the bank and am really just sad that these are the only two options we can think up. I do think that some government regulation of insurance companies might make a lot of peoples lives better, but band-aids aren’t going to fix this problem. We’re in a real pickle that everyone seems to see, but manages to ignore. I like to think of myself as a hopeful person, but the only solace I can take in these shenanigans is that more people will wake up that we need drastically new ideas, not just a copy of a copy of a copy of some socialist dream.
